Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a second grade teacher in a very impoverished area of New York. I have been working in this area for the past 11 years. I work in a "barrier-free" school. "Barrier-free" means that my school opens its doors to all children within the community, regardless of their physical or mental handicap. you see children in wheelchairs and walkers working right alongside their peers. It's an amazing thing to see. It's really how all schools should be.

With the ever-changing technology and amazing advances that have been made in that front, it is truly essential that all children learn how to use a computer at an early age. I have 2 old Dell PCs in my classroom that are very old and the NY Department of Education has blocked just about every website from them. The students that I have that do know how to operate a computer are better at it than I am! I believe that children are sponges. If you teach them as much as you can while they are still young, their future is limitless.

If I had a portable mini Hewlett Packard laptop in my classroom, I would be able to give all of my children to opportunity to work with a computer on a one on one basis. They can sit with it at their desk to become comfortable with it, learn from it, do research on it, and use it just as they use other classroom learning materials. Every year, I have my students do one informational unit on researching a holiday of their choice and a second one on researching a famous individual of their choice. We got through the holiday unit, but barely. I printed out as much as I could from my classroom computers, but the children themselves did not get the hands-on experience of doing the research themselves. I would love to give them that opportunity for the biographical unit.

With your support, my students will have an invaluable tool in our classroom that will be used for years to come. They will gain vital knowledge of how use to use and navigate a computer at a young age. This will put them ahead in life. Myself, as well as my students, would be incredibly grateful to receive this laptop.
