My class is in great need of chapter books that will stimulate their varying interests. I have selected chapter books that my students have specifically asked for, like Junie B. Jones books for the girls, and Horrible Harry books for the boys.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a 31 year old teacher of a class of 24 bright, loving and special second grade students. I work in a very impoverished area of the South Bronx. My school is a "barrier free" school. This means that we open our doors to all children, regardless of their physical limitations. Children with physical handicaps make up a large part of my school's population. It brings me great joy to see children with wheelchairs, walkers and canes attending public school and acquiring the same education as the rest of the children in their neighborhood.

My students reading abilities range from the beginning stages of emergent reading all the way to fluent readers with excellent comprehension. I do not have nearly enough books in my classroom to keep my children interested and engaged. The key to getting children to learn how to read is by giving them books that they are interested in and just don't want to put down! Right now, I have very few books like that. In turn, I have noticed a lack of motivation and excitement in my children when it comes to reading time.

I have asked my children what books excite them most and what they'd like to learn about. My girls are avid fans of Junie B. Jones chapter books, which makes me very happy because they want to challenge themselves with chapter books. My boys seem to love the Horrible Harry trilogy of chapter books. Once again, I'm excited to see them choosing challenging books. My students also informed me that they want to learn more about the 4 seasons and holidays. I have chosen several books from each of the categories that my children have chosen.

I would be above and beyond grateful to receive the books that I have requested for my students. They are an amazing bunch of kids and they truly deserve the world. Little by little, I am trying to give them as much as I possibly can!
