Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students on my team chose Astronomy or Physical Science because they want to study science. Some are college bound, many don't know yet.
These two sciences are not required but satisfy the requirements for graduation.
Often they have already completed their requirement for science by the time they enroll in Astronomy and Physical Science.
My students want to experience science in a way that will prepare them for the rigorous classes they know may be necessary later in high school or college.
My Project
In the 21st Century we can ensure that every student never misses school. I plan to video record all lessons during the 2021-2022 school year. I learned during the pandemic that students miss school for many reasons. Quarantining is only one. In 2021 I began using more videos to help students that missed class instruction. Students could watch the videos whether they were present or not. Unfortunately, the instruction in the videos often did not quite cover what I was teaching. Some topics were not needed, while others did not include some essential standards.
By the end of the year, I decided to video record all my lessons.
I did this every day for the final exam review. When I saw students watching my videos in class to review for their final that cemented my commitment to record all my lessons during 2021-2022.
My school is purchasing much of what I need for video recording my lessons daily. Items on order include a camera, tripod, lapel microphone, etc. All that remains is a MacBook Air M1. This will allow me to edit the videos in my class. My students will then be able to watch any lessons they miss. The five days of recording I made this May 2021 has taught me a lot about my instructional technique. I expect this will make me a more effective teacher. I am confident that all students, including those with special needs, will re-watch and review lessons. Furthermore, using Microsoft Teams, students whose primary language is not English will see subtitles in their own language.
Video recording my lessons using the MacBook Air M1 will be a game changer for me and all my students in our 24-7 Science Academy.
