This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is preparing for the 21st Century by using online programs such as Jiji Math, Pearsonsuccess.net, and Accelerated Reader. Unfortunately, the computers in our class are dated and limited.

My school is a low-income school located in an urban school district.

We are a Title 1 school which means that more than 50% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. This designation is based on federal income guidelines. The students in my class are enthusiastic learners and are eager to use technology to learn their grade level standards. They read their Accelerated Reader books at home and/or school several times and wait for a chance to take a reading quiz on the computer. Many of my students do not have computers at home so the only opportunity they have to access to online programs is during our class rotation period.

My Project

Our class is in desperate need of updated technology. A new class laptop will allow the students to access various online computer programs that are standards based. These programs provide review, reteaching opportunities for struggling learners, and differentiated activities for accelerated learners. This is the first year the students are participating in the Accelerated Reader program. The students will read books and take quizzes online. Many skills are developed through this program which include decoding, vocabulary, and reading comprehension. More importantly this program develops an understanding of the reading process and develops a life-long love of reading. This is developed by linking students with books at their appropriate reading level and interest. The class laptop will allow students to take the Accelerated Reader quizzes.
