21st Century Learning with Chromebooks

My Students

The first computer filled an entire room. Now, it is amazing how much one can do with something that fits in a student's hand. A Google Chromebook has the potential to transform my technology-scarce classroom with innovative projects and endless learning opportunities.

My students are amazing!

They are a group of mindful middle-schoolers that are learning about themselves and their interests every day. They are eager to learn and are fascinated with learning more about the world around them and what is to come in the future. My students live in a beautiful, tiny town in rural North Carolina. The town where our school is located has a population of approximately 2,000 people. Our school serves around 650 students in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade. Out of these 650 students, 75% are considered economically disadvantaged. Our school has three small computer labs that are shared among the entire school. You can imagine how hard it is for my students to gain access to a lab! Aside from the difficulties at school, with so many students being economically disadvantaged, they do not have access to electronics or technology at home either. Because of these hardships, my students are lacking the opportunities to become technology experts!

My Project

Imagine a paperless classroom! This is unheard of at our school. With a Google Chromebook, my students would have access to create awesome virtual products of learning to display their knowledge. Long gone are the days of huge stacks of posters on my back counter. Now, a collection of beautifully created Glogs (interactive posters) will be waiting on me as I log onto Edmodo (a safe site for students and teachers to collaborate). Students can create eye-catching cartoons with ScreenChomp, attention-grabbing presentations with Prezi, voice-overs with Sound Cloud, and videos with Animoto. The list of learning possibilities is endless! Not to mention the opportunities the Chromebook would open up for differentiation. Having technology access would allow me to provide interventions and enrichment to allow students to work at their own pace and academic level. Having regular access to technology will allow students to gain vital skills to make them successful in the future!

In today's global economy, it's rare to find a career that does not use technology.

Everyone from farmers to doctors to inventors need technological skills to be able to compete in a 21st century world. Without access to technology my students are at a huge disadvantage.
