21st Century Kids In Need of 21st Century Tech

My students need more frequent access to laptops and the internet. Our school is currently operating at a 30:1 ratio. It is difficult to give students time to research and work on projects.

My Students

My 8th grade students are some of the best and brightest that Baltimore City has to offer! They are motivated to learn and grow and be prepared for high school and all life has to offer. I teach in a school where many families have resources, but in city and district where inequity runs rampant. My students all have incredible skills and talents, but come from many different backgrounds and family situations. My goals are to meet them where they are and give them the tools they need to be successful.

In our history class we learn from the past and discuss how issues and conflicts in our current community and country can be traced to historical events.

It is not always easy to get 8th grades engaged in history, but I believe that the study of the influences and problems of the past can help us create students engaged in making a better future.

My Project

Giving students a black and white photocopy of Paul Revere's Boston Massacre engraving will never have the same impact as a an electronic copy of the original artifact that students can zoom in on to see the blood on the ground and look on Red Coats' faces. This is one of my favorite lessons each year, discussing the bias and impact of the Boston Massacre on the American Revolution. Unfortunately, its just one more handout if I make a copy of the image, but if students can interact with it...zoom in...pick out key details, then 240 years can melt away for 8th graders!

My students need to be able have these experiences so that history can really come alive for them.

We need better and more frequent access to online databases of historical artifacts and documents. They need to be able to conduct their own research for projects, like National History Day. If we don't have computers, tablets, and the internet than history stays on the pages of a textbook and in the past for my students. If these Chromebooks are purchased I can decrease the tech to student ratio to 1:4 in my classes.

Students can get their hand on 21st century tools much more frequently and can be better prepared for high school and college.
