My 8th graders are a diverse group that range from Level 1 struggling Readers to accomplished Level 5s. About 95% of our population are on Free/Reduced Lunch and come from broken homes that may consist of a single parent household. Others, come from a home that have a guardian that may be home only home about 30% of the time. Within this array of student performance, oftentimes it is a challenge to bring up your level 1s, while maintaining the level 5s. So, in order to close the achievement gap, I have found some research-based individual learning systems that can contribute to the learning of of students to become college and career ready. The problem is in the limited technological resources available to our students.
In Science, there is a myriad of abstract concepts that as an educator you simply cannot lecture about, rather there needs to be assimilations, experiments as well as virtual labs in order to peak the interest of our students.
With our students growing up in this constant virtual and tech savvy culture, educators need to stir our kids in a responsible way of attaining information in our modern society.
The academically infamous question of all time, "When am I going to use this information?" My students have difficulty connecting the theory of what they are learning to real-life application. With such technical resources, they can experience virtual labs and research what aspects of Science they could better connect to and select a field in which they can be employed in.
My passion is to have students exposed, equipped and able to compete with their peers when it is time for them to interact in the work field.
Assimilations include discovering the Human Body system, calculating air pressure, and ground mapping for surveying. All of this can be done on an tablet with the accurate apps downloaded.
Providing this for my students would be such a great aid in stirring them in being engaged, and capable innovators for the 21st Century.
