My students need a 21st century approach to practicing reading and math concepts where they're able to use real world manipulatives and be able to get instant feedback.
Our classroom is made up 18 of the most adorably curious and diverse students in Charleston! No joke, I feel lucky every single day I get to work with them. Some days I teach them. Most days they teach me. Our school is located in Mount Pleasant, a small town about 10 minutes from downtown. We're a partial magnet school so we pull some of our students from all over Charleston and the barrier islands. Our students come from a wide variety of households. At about 39% poverty, we have a good group of students, some of which have had limited access to technology.
My Project
This DonorsChoose project was created because as much as I love flashcards and task cards, these items are often used in a station where the students are working independently. I wanted a way to have the students use real world manipulatives as well as use flashcards that give immediate feedback. This way the work is more meaningful and they'd have the ability to self-check as they work. The primary measurement kit would provide students with a real life application for math concepts that they wouldn't have a connection to if they just used a worksheet. The HOT DOTS would be a way to have students working in a center on a concept and be checking their work as they went along! Plus, the best part, they're so much fun!! These manipulatives and HOT DOTS pens and cards will be used every day by our students to help them reinforce topics like reading comprehension, antonyms, homophones, digraphs and several math topics!!
