2025-26 Louisiana Young Reader Choice Books for PreK-2nd Broncos!
Help me give my students in Pre-K to 2nd grade the opportunity to read and check out the titles chosen for the 2025-26 Louisiana Young Readers Choice Books!
Every year, the Louisiana State Library create lists of books for children, including those in Kindergarten to 2nd graders. According to their website, "Louisiana’s young people have read nearly 1.5 million books and cast over 460,000 votes in the 25 years since the program began... The purpose of the program is to foster a love of reading in the children of Louisiana by motivating them to participate in the recognition of outstanding books. The lists are well-balanced selections of high-quality fiction, nonfiction, and poetry." I read the picture books to each class during their library enrichment throughout the school year. After I read them aloud, the students are always itching to check them out and read them again on their own or with their family at home. We have fun lessons related to the titles. We also take Accelerated Reader quizzes for some of the titles to help us improve our comprehension skills. These books are high-interest titles that feature characters and issues that appeal to young readers.
This past year, almost all of our school's Pre-K to 2nd graders read all fifteen of the LYRC Titles, and they received certificates from the Louisiana State Library for reading all of these.
In the spring, everyone votes on their favorite title from the list. Through this process, the students learn about voting and elections. Students from the whole state participate to let their voices be heard.
This year, there are books, like Nat the Cat, that give early readers in kindergarten confidence with words they can read. There are non-fiction books, such as Cookie Queen, about a young, inspirational entrepreneur, and Not a Monster, about the interesting axolotl creature. One Chicken Nugget is a twist on the mathematical legend of Sissa, with a monster who can't get enough chicken nuggets!
