My Project

Every year, the Louisiana State Library create a list of books for Kindergarten-2nd graders and a list of books for 3rd-5th graders. According to the State Library's website, since 1999, "Louisiana’s young people have read nearly 1.5 million books and cast over 460,000 votes... . The purpose of the program is to foster a love of reading... by motivating (children) to participate in the recognition of outstanding books. The lists are well-balanced selections of high-quality fiction, nonfiction, and poetry." The students are challenged to read as many of the books as possible. If they read at least three of the books, they are able to vote on their favorite. Through this process, the students learn about voting and elections. Students from the whole state participate to let their voices be heard.

We have older "buddies" read to the Kindergarten-2nd graders the LA Young Readers Choice (LYRC) books aloud.

I also read the LYRC books aloud to classes in the library. This year, I plan to have an exchange among teachers so they can have a book a week to read aloud in class.

For 3rd-5th graders, the students check out the books, sometimes read the picture books in groups in the library, and occasionally I read these aloud to the library classes. The fifth graders who read the most books, show comprehension with AR tests and show the most interest are able to be on our Battle of the Books Team. They prepare for the five rounds at the April competition at ArtBreak. We competed against 29 teams and came in 13th place for our first year!

At the end of the year, we vote for our favorite LYRC books. Then we celebrate with a LYRC Party and announce the books that won the most votes.
