This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach a group of "at promise" minority students who were pre-identified because they struggle in multiple areas, academics, attendance, and behavior. This program and class was specifically created from a grant to combat the challenges that some of our students are facing due to COVID. The class is designed to provide students with academic and social emotional support to be successful in high school and provide them with opportunities to develop their leadership skills.
My students are still feeling the negative impact that COVID and the pandemic left on their academic and social emotional states.
Many of my students are dealing with food or home insecurity, loss of motivation and the learning loss from remote learning.
My class and lessons focus a lot on character development, mindfulness, and goal setting. My students tend to exhibit extrinsic motivation and tend to work harder if there are incentives and knowing that they will be rewarded with something tangible.
The quotes and affirmation cards will provide a positive learning space and constant reminder to students that they do matter, that they are important, and that they are capable. The other items will allow me to reward students in a fun way for making improvements and/or meeting certain criteria such as attendance, making improvements in their grades, and meeting certain personalized academic goals. Providing students with a fun way to earn prizes by twisting the gumball machine or by using the claw machine will be an incentive to make better choices and to work harder to overcome the challenges that COVID brought to their lives.
