Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach Kindergarten at a Title I public school where 100% of the students receive free lunch. Seven out of my 18 students are English language learners. Some of the students live under stressful circumstances and come from low income families. Their parents are immigrants so they are trying to adjust to a new culture and they also do not speak English. Some of these children have no parental figures, and others must care for their younger siblings. Seven of my students came into my classroom with no background knowledge. In spite of their circumstances, my students are eager to learn and love coming to school!
My Project
The materials that I am requesting are hands on materials to help my students learn about shapes, addition, subtraction, graphs, etc.
Children learn by doing.
Five year old children need concrete materials to build on early math concepts. For instance, the Math Self Checking Match Ups are self-correcting puzzles that will help my students build knowledge from number patterns to word problems!
My kindergarteners will be able to increase their number and operations, algebraic thinking, graphing, and geometry skills.
I will model how to use these materials in whole group instruction, then during guided math, and finally during centers where the students will work independently.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
