My Students

J.R.R. Tolkien once wrote, "Not all those who wander are lost."

A wall in my classroom was painted by my student, a talented graffiti artist.

The wall has the word "Think" sprawled across, with the Tolkien quote tucked in the corner. This wall is an ode to our students' opportunity to think freely. Our school is part of the District Reference Group H, which is the second lowest socioeconomic level a school can be placed in.

As a fifth-year, eighth-grade science teacher, I have already experienced the lack of funding our science program receives. The activities that we complete, both in and out of the classroom, are greatly restricted by the socioeconomic makeup of our student body, as well as the absence of a budget for laboratory supplies.

The students in our school come from very diverse backgrounds and cultures and often do not have the resources that allow them to succeed at higher levels. Many of the students are disengaged, with attendance of less than 85%, but are often discouraged by the connections made at school. Despite this, they are very willing to work in school and take the opportunity to utilize the limited resources that are available.

My Project

As a college student, I was fortunate enough to explore parts of Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming as part of a biodiversity course. This opportunity changed my life, as it opened my eyes to the true beauty of nature, and put me on a path to becoming the teacher I am today.

I have encouraged some of my students to explore a similar opportunity, which will allow them to hike, camp, and canoe through the Adirondacks, as part of a scholarship presented by the Daniel Barden Mudfest, in honor of Daniel Barden, one of the students who lost his life in the incident at Sandy Hook.

Daniel's family and friends have carried on his legacy in an amazing way, providing opportunities for students, who may not otherwise have, to explore nature and find appreciation in forming relationships and finding themselves. After such a tragedy, teaching students about tolerance and forming relationships through such an innovative measure will certainly bring back advocates to their individual schools.

I would like to provide my students who will be attending this amazing trip with the bare essentials for backpacking; boots, water bottles, paracord, and headlamps. In an effort to make this dream come true for my students, who don't often get a chance to leave the city limits, I am asking for your generosity and assistance. Finding myself in the wilderness changed my life, and I'd like to pass that feeling on to future generations.
