Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students need a field trip that will allow them to get out of the Bay Area, see a foreign country, try foreign foods and experience a foreign culture. As students in a low-income/high poverty community, students face difficult challenges so traveling outside of our country is a foreign idea by itself.

My students are unique because they face the toughest challenges while being resilient, creative, passionate, diversified, caring and loving.

Our kids love success stories, love expressing themselves, love creative writing, and love community building. A large percentage of them are being raised in single parent households while others come from families that are impoverished. When we see this at our school, we feed kids out of our own pockets and classrooms. Without a doubt, going on this trip will impact their lives, and could potentially help prevent them from feeling neglected.

When students come to my class, they know that I am here to support them and provide them with a ¨big picture¨ while making class relevant and challenging. I always emphasize the importance of traveling and when students see my own personal travels, they are truly inspired and motivated to do so themselves.

My Project

Our purpose is to promote success in academics while also developing and supporting students of our East Oakland Community as they prepare for life during and after Castlemont. 2018 will be significant because it will be their first time leaving the US to explore Xian, Shanghai, and Beijing, China in an effort to help our young 11th and 12th grade men become more economically, socially, politically, and culturally diversified.

Before leaving to China, young men will be doing fundraising while also learning about Chinese customs and law to prepare for this unique adventure.

During our stay in China, we will visit the Terracotta Excavation Site in Xian, the Great Wall of China in Beijing, Tiananmen Square in Beijing, Beijing University, Shanghai’s Historic District, Shanghai’s Stock Exchange, and China’s factories. Throughout our stay, we'll time travel from China's rural areas to its heavily populated cities and suburbs while experiencing its different forms of transportation and communication. Students will have the opportunity to see how vastly different Chinese culture is from central China to northern China to eastern China while observing various local delicacies, fashions, architecture, and people.

This trip will be special because students will learn about China's stock market in Shanghai, the history of the Great Wall of China in Beijing, and the importance of the Terracotta Soldiers in Xian while being dependent on each other. One of the great things that will come out of this whole trip is how every day, students will be engaged in an itinerary that allows them to explore while being enriched with customs and traditions that they didn't know existed prior to traveling. Students will become culturally enriched while also developing a stronger awareness and acceptance of difference.
