Every year, students in grades four and five are always looking forward to the upcoming Golden Sower nominees. Starting at the end of a school year following into the summer and into the new school year, students either wait anxiously to preview the new titles and/or wait on a long list of “holds” through the public library.
The book nominees provide a range of interest & reading levels, in which students are enthusiastic and motivated to read; this is not because they are required, but because they want too!
Students display a genuine interest week to week and becomes apparent in their actions and expressions when it comes time in recieving one.
My Project
Every year, the Golden Sower nominees are in high demand. With only a limited number of copies through the public library, students are having to wait, therefore I strive to provide multiple copies for students to read each school year.
Not only does this project promote literacy skills, like comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency, but more importantly it gets students excited and interested in reading for enjoyment!
These books are also utilized for our Golden Sower club (aka book club), which provides a more in-depth opportunity for students to discuss and provide their insights. In turn, the distrtct hosts a Golden Sower competition in the spring where teams compete to show off their knowledge and comprehension skills for each book.
