2011 Sebsonian Colonial Classroom Museum

My students need clay, craft sticks, paint, and display boards to create a classroom museum display on Colonial America.

My Students

Students have been given the task of being a museum worker and must create a display with at least one 3D object that would teach other students about that topic from American history. Then, they will act as tour guides, taking other students through the museum teaching them about all the displays.

My students live in a rural/suburb setting just north of a large city.

We have a wide range of students from low SES to high SES. Basically, these kids are the "salt of the earth" kind of students. With such a range, and reductions to education, many students are having difficulty getting supplies for projects like this one.

My Project

Rather than reading out of a text book and completing a worksheet, students will learn by creating and participating in a rigorous project that demands higher levels of thought than what comes from a worksheet. With these materials, students will be able to construct displays or projects that will help teach others and themselves about our history. My goal is to make history fun.

Unless we get help, my 6 year long project might have to end.

Parents in our area have been hit hard by layoffs and foreclosures and cannot afford additional expenses of these supplies. By talking to past students, it is projects like this that require higher levels of thinking, that they remember and not the worksheets.
