Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach the best grade, Transitional Kindergarten! "What is that?" most people ask. I tell them it is a developmentally appropriate learning environment for children who are not yet 5, therefore they can not yet enter kindergarten in the state of California. TK is all about building relationships and social emotional development. We focus on hands-on activities that teach through play and art. My classroom is in what people consider High poverty/High risk school. I like to think it means we just have to be a high creative school.
My Project
My TK students take turns using our 4 district issued Chromebooks and are always thrilled when it is their day to engage in developing individual reading skills while using the technology. I am very grateful for these wonderful resources we have been given. However, I am unable to add any other apps to our Chromebooks, due to hard drive limitations. I recognize the importance of exposing children to meaningful technology at an early age and the substantial benefits of engaging students in technology-integrated literacy and math activities.
I am requesting 2 class iPads for my students so that these differentiated literacy experiences can become more frequent and all students can participate.
More than half of my students are English Language Learners, so our classroom needs vary greatly. With the addition of iPads, my students will be able to use rigorously researched apps that enhance phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. All of these skills are essential in order to become a proficient reader and learners.
