My Students

Remember how excited you were the first time a concept really clicked in your head? You were hooked! The quest for knowledge was in your entire body and you couldn't wait until school was over so that you could share your success with your family.

My students are energetic, bright-eyed, caring 3rd graders who come to school each day ready and eager to learn, despite facing challenges that 8 and 9 year olds should not face.

Our school serves one of the most impoverished areas in the district. Approximately 92% of the families are eligible for free and reduced meals. Families work hard to provide the most basic necessities for their children (food, shelter, and clothing). However, in many cases it is simply not enough.

My Project

The carpet squares will add more movement in the classroom throughout the day. Movement in the classroom will help keep the students more focused and engaged. The squares will also provide a more comfortable, central meeting place where students are learning and team building. Students will meet on the carpet daily for read aloud time, to learn new vocabulary, and to practice reading and math strategies. The math manipulatives and games will help extend my students' critical thinking and help them work on mastering math facts and concepts to prepare them for 4th grade by the end of the year. Board games will help students think more critically and strategically and will also build their social skills. We also need more dry erase markers for whiteboards. The markers will help visual learners stay engaged and provide a quick formative assessment of the concepts gained from the lessons. They will allow me a quick look at who is on the right track and who will need more instruction.

I am a new teacher on a limited income with a family to support.

Any donations received will help maintain our strong, caring classroom community that we have built. The carpet squares will provide them with an opportunity to gather in a comfortable place for whole group learning. The new learning center and the other materials will help keep my students more engaged.Engaged students are successful students. These tools will help improve math fluency and literacy, which are essential skills in life.
