1st Year Teacher Needs Books!

My students need a variety of books for guided reading lessons, based on individual reading levels. They also need a strong classroom library for independent reading, as well as high-quality, differentiated math and writing instruction.

My Students

This fall, I will be a 1st year teacher. I have had the wonderful fortune of being hired at the school where I spent a semester as a student teacher. What's even more awesome is that I will have the same group of students that I had as a student teacher, as a new teacher with my own classroom.

As a student teacher, I had the pleasure of being in a gifted 1st grade classroom, where I developed many strong bonds.

When I return this fall, as a first year teacher with my own classroom, I will return as the gifted 2nd grade teacher, where I will have the pleasure of working with my former students again. They brightened many of my days as a student teacher with their remarkable academic ability, wit, creativity, and charming personalities. They are also some of the kindest children I have ever met. I couldn't be more excited about joining them again!

My Project

My students will be in a gifted 2nd grade classroom. Most of them are already reading at a 3rd grade level, and some at beginning 4th grade levels. Therefore, I need a variety of books that begin with 2nd grade reading levels and span all the way to 5th grade, to accommodate all reading abilities in my classroom, from the beginning to the end of the school year.

Every primary classroom needs a variety of books, not only to accommodate varying levels of reading ability, but that also take into consideration cultural relevancy and student interest.

For these reasons, I have not only included multiple leveled readers, but a variety of other books to begin building a classroom library.

It is also important that students receive high-quality, differentiated math instruction. Therefore, I have included a professional development book that offers ideas about how to develop math centers to both meet individual student needs, as well as keep all students engaged. Further, it is important to help build community with a student-lead morning meeting each day, so I have included a book that has ideas for that.
