1st Graders Want to Explore the Wonders of the World Through Weekly Readers
My students need 100 subscriptions to Weekly Readers to help them explore non-fiction text and build a growing curiosity and knowledge for the world around them.
In 1st Grade we say ‘knowledge is empowering’. I want my students to feel empowered because they feel their learning is relevant. Exposure to current events through Weekly Readers builds confidence in students because they are learning information that is real and important in the world around them.
I want to give my students the tools they need to be passionate and confident learners.
Our school is Title 1 with over 90% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. These young and diverse learners have overcome so many obstacles that are out of their control and work so hard. I want to offer my students as many educational outlets as possible and teach them about the world they are living in. Most of my students do not have access to current events at home; many families do not speak English and many cannot afford televisions.
Unfortunately, we now have limited access to current events at our school because our subscriptions to Weekly Reader had to be canceled due to budget cuts. I want to prepare all my students to learn in, succeed in, and appreciate the wonderful world around them and all the opportunities it has to offer. Weekly Readers open up endless learning opportunities for students. Please join me in offering this opportunity to the deserving students at Highland!
My Project
Weekly Readers will give our 1st Graders the opportunity to explore nonfiction text and build knowledge of the world while increasing reading comprehension, vocabulary, and critical-thinking skills. Each student magazine is full of vivid photos, colorful illustrations, maps, diagrams, and other conventions of nonfiction that help students in becoming confident readers.
Weekly Readers encourage class discussion and help EL students develop vocabulary and confidence as well. The topics covered in each issue expose students to current events, science, and social studies while helping them connected to the world around them. I have used Weekly Readers in my classroom before and my students have felt so proud to be learning about things that truly matter in our society.
Your donation will make a huge difference for these young learners.
Exposure to current events through Weekly Readers will build our students confidence and encourage them to get involved in their world. Due to budget cuts our school is unable to provide our students with Weekly Readers. Please join me in offering our students this amazing and important learning tool.
