1st Graders Need to STEAM Ahead

My Students

Scientists observe, categorize, make notes, research, and question conventional wisdom. I want my first grade scientists, mathematicians, and engineers to learn to learn to look critically at their world. I want them to examine the picture books by Eric Carle for scientific accuracy.

My first grade students are very excited about doing anything that involves learning about science, technology, engineering, and math, but they need help because we have no money for special STEAM projects.

My school is close to two military bases and a significant number of my students are dependents of deployed military personnel. Our student population is racially and ethnically diverse. 10% of my children are in a bilingual or ELL program. They want to learn about bugs, plants and critters. My first graders love the picture books by Eric Carle, but just how accurate are the books? Students will begin by studying/ deconstructing the Eric Carle books. Then, they will compare the books to real living organisms. This project will help my students become critical consumers of information. They will learn the importance of asking if the information contained in books is accurate. They will also learn how to find and discover answers via scientific observation.

My Project

My kids are familiar with Eric Carle books. They love the pictures and topics but they do not question the accuracy of science behind the books. I have requested copies of 6 Eric Carle titles, copies of nonfiction companion books, seeds, crabs, bugnoculars, science notebooks and art supplies. My students will begin by critically examining the Carle books. Students will compare them to the nonfiction books. Next, they will use bugnoculars to study bugs up close and observe the plants & crabs while making notations in their science notebooks. Finally, my students will make an Eric Carle Bug and Beyond Quilt. Using muslin fabric, fabric markers and other art supplies, each student will create 6 different quilt blocks. Each block will depict one of Carle's works and a student-discovered-science-fact. The completed blocks will be sewn together by parent helpers so that each student will have a quilt to keep.

My kids have all the needs and none of the resources of other schools.

Our small K-6 public school is close to two military bases and over forty years old, but although over 60% of our students qualify for free and reduced breakfast and lunch, we are not a Title I school. We do not have money for special STEAM projects. This project will have an immediate, lasting impact on my students. They will learn to look critically at the facts presented in books while observing plants, bugs and crabs.
