1st Graders Attend an Ethnic Dance Performance

My students need admission to "People Like Me," an ethnic dance performance exploring myths, legends and folktales. Students will watch the story of the Sun Goddess unfold before them through dances from Mexico, Korea, Japan, India and Peru.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach first grade in an inner-city, high-poverty elementary school where 85% of the students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Although there are many theaters just blocks from students' homes and our school, these children rarely experience live theater, music, or dance.

The "People Like Me" dance performance has been a beloved experience by our 1st graders in years past. We are sad to hear that they are discontinuing this program after this year. In this last season's performance, students will get an opportunity to see Korean, Japanese, Mexican, Indian and Peruvian dance at the Herbst Theater in downtown San Francisco. The story of the Sun Goddess will come alive through dance right before our 1st graders' eyes. These students especially love music and movement, so this performance is such an exciting opportunity.

Students and chaperones need admission to the last season of "People Like Me." We are fortunate to be within walking distance of Herbst Theater.

Your donation will make it possible for students to experience music, dance and theater first-hand at a beautiful downtown theater. Music and movement are part of my students' everyday life. This is an opportunity for them to see how far the arts can take you if you try. The trip is for all three first grade classes at our school, so you will be reaching sixty students through your generosity. We will further the experience through class discussions and writing projects. Thank you for supporting our teaching, our students, and public education!
