My Students
My students are amazing. The area is middle class with two parent households. Education is an important part life, along with extra curricular activities such as musical lessons, athletic practices, and dance recitals. Moms and dads often volunteer in the classroom to help support student learning. Family is an important aspect of life and supporting one another in education is high.
The best part is when students are happy and having fun; they produce an incredible laugh and it spontaneously puts a smile on my face, and I know I am doing great work.
As with all first grade students, there are varying levels of learners. The work hard in class and success in school is expected. I love working with these little people. I see so much growth from the beginning of the year through the end of the year. This is the beginning of what they can be. They are mini inspirations to each other, budding into their future selves, and building that future by working and learning now for tomorrow.
My Project
Our new superintendent has challenged teachers to create a “book-rich” environment in every classroom. Book access is a significant factor in literacy development.
Research shows that students in classrooms with high-quality classroom libraries read 50 percent more than students who do not have access to a library in the classroom.
Teachers are encouraged to be “choosy” about the books in a classroom library and to avoid purchasing every outdated and dog-eared book from yard sales. Students need to get excited about the books in the classroom library. Having a high-quality classroom library would allow me to present and display books in enticing ways that encourage and prompt interest, dialogue, and thinking. With a growing classroom library, the buzz about books in our classroom will bloom!
