My Students

My students are truly amazing. This incoming group of children are going to be, by far, the best class I've ever had! They are passionate, thoughtful, kind, and deserving. They are creative and wonderful participants. Our neighborhood has a mix of ethnicities, cultures, and income levels, so each child has something very special to contribute. These children LOVE to learn through being active!

I have many students with special needs this year.

They require extra support to be successful, which is extremely difficult with budget cuts and minimal resources. I teach in a low-income, Title I school, where 100% of the students receive free lunch and breakfast. Despite this, my students love being at school and are so eager to learn! distance learning will prove to be a challenge, but we are all ready and excited to embark on this new adventure together.

My Project

The books that I am requesting will be used for read-alouds in the classroom (and on Zoom!). It is important to celebrate Black culture and Black history all year long, so I am compiling a book set to integrate into my daily teaching. Because we are 100% distance learning, it's difficult to connect with my students. Read-alouds are one of the only things that really capture their attention! My diverse set of students also need to see that there are characters that look like them. They need to be seen in the stories so that they can build a connection to the literature.

This book set will help validate my Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) students - their skin color, hair, and culture must be celebrated!

The literature will promote love, acceptance, tolerance, empathy, social justice, and hopefully activism!
