Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I serve 662 students as an art teacher for elementary students. About 640 of them live in poverty. They need special things. I give them plants and hats and canvases and sculptures. They have next to nothing at home and need more.
Some of them do not speak English, and a great many are struggling English learners, all growing competency in literacy.
Some of them are special needs students and SPED tracked. Most of them don't have crayons and paper at home. They are K-6 26 different classes with 10-30 students per class.
My Project
I am the art teacher in a Monterrey County K-6 elementary school. We just did auditions for the performer roles in our annual play. This year we are presenting an adapted version of Disney's Frozen. We are sending out permission slips next week for the after school club (held once a week) that will collaborate with the theater director and cast to create the play's set: paintings and structures. We are proud to give our students a new activity as our site runs our own after school program.
We will print copies for every cast member to have their own script.
We will use the grease pens to trace the sets onto hardboard and foam core. We will be saving our students' clothes with a nice assortment of smocks.
We will be paining a lot of blue and white and a variety of highlights to create the fantasy winter environment. Brushes and pallets will get us there.
