My Students
Our student group comes from Hall-Dale High School in Farmingdale, Maine. The group ranges in grade-level with freshmen, sophomores, and juniors signed up to attend this phenomenal learning experience. Our high energy students are inquisitive and are eager to step away from their technology-filled lives to partake in a “time travel” journey that includes interacting with cows instead of cellphones. As teachers, we are looking forward to this too.
Our students are of diverse backgrounds, some of whom live on farms and are looking forward to being able to use old-timey equipment at the Living History Center, while others in the group have spent most of their lives living in or near Maine’s larger cities.
As a whole, our group of students is enthusiastic and looks forward to digging into this learning experience with open hands, hearts, and minds.
My Project
At the Living History Center, our group of students will join in a 24-hour live-in “time travel” experience to the past in which they will learn about family and farm life in rural Maine in the 1870s. Activities include working the farm, attending to chores, cooking on a wood-fired cookstove, preparing meals as and performing tasks without the aid of modern technology, and experiencing learning in a one-room schoolhouse, 1850's-style. Students will also learn about the important role of the Washburn family in US history, particularly about their role in support of abolition of slavery, Abraham Lincoln, and preserving American democratic values.
We have framed our journey around the essential questions:
How does where we live impact how we live?
What choices did our ancestors make that affect the way we live today?
What can we learn from rural living traditions of the past?
