15 Miles on the Erie Canal

My students need 9 books to learn about the Erie Canal.

This project is fully funded

I am the librarian in a K-6 Expeditionary school in a high needs community. Expeditionary Learning (EL)was developed as a program of Outward Bound and has been in existence since 1993. EL promotes active learning, real-world projects, high quality work and service to others.

Our second graders are just about to start an expedition about life on the Erie Canal. Unfortunately, our library only contains two books about the Erie Canal. New books are costly and my annual library budget is only $1,000 a year. With that money, I have to buy books for all 7 grades (K-6) and I would only be able to purchase one or two additional books on the Erie Canal.

With your help, I would like to purchase 9 additional books about the Erie Canal that would be beneficial to the second graders. These books contain facts about what life was like before the Erie Canal was developed and how life for New Yorkers changed once the canal was in operation. These books would be housed in the library and used for years to come.

New library books are invaluable to our students and I know these books will be used for the whole semester while the second graders are doing there in-depth study on the Erie Canal. Your generosity will make it possible for our students to do quality research about the canal that runs through their neighborhood.
