Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Why Solar Energy?...It is a viable source of energy that is completely renewable, sustainable, and free to harvest!

My students are incredible!

I have 28 motivated English Learner students eager to learn. My students come from a low socioeconomic background with limited resources available. We are a Title 1, Performance Improvement school with 100% free lunch program. Many parents work 2 jobs and are struggling to support the the family. Thanks to Part 1 of Teach for the Planet, we received solar panels to connect to our portable CD players. Our project is designed to show how solar power can be captured and used as sustainable energy. We will connect the panels to the CD players as they are powered by the Sun! We will teach other classes the steps and procedures to eventually make this a school wide project. We also are making solar ovens so children can see how the sun, a free clean energy source, can be used for cooking food. Making everyone accountable for their actions is the first step to environmental awareness!

My Project

Part 2 of our Teach for the Planet project will be the invention of innovative solar cars. I will first read the books that will delve deep into the understanding of solar power. They will then work collaboratively in teams to design and create solar cars that will be entered in our 1st Annual Class Grand Prix! This project hits all areas of Common Core standards where students are reading complex text and relating it to themselves and the world around them. This will be an integrated curriculum that will tie reading, writing, science, and art into a unit of study. They must design, write, and give valid reasons as to why they think their car is the best. Lessons will be rigorous where higher-order thinking skills will be in place. Not only will the wheels on the solar cars be moving, but so will the wheels in the minds of these kids! The solar radio and panel charger will be used for the tablets and in case of an emergency where power is down.

We need to prepare American students for an increasingly global and competitive workforce.

This is a great start because not only are we teaching them to think critically, but they are also becoming environmentally conscious of our natural energy sources that we have available while also understanding the importance of sustaining a healthy planet.
