About My Students
Bryan has been coming to the school library since he was knee-high to a grasshopper. He is now in seventh grade and mad about mythology. I wonder if that is a stage that a lot of kids go through. I can remember being gaga about gods and heroes at that age, too.
In fact, I was telling Bryan how I loved to read Greek, Egyptian and Norse mythology in books by Roger Lancelyn Green. He pulled a face and told me I should try Rick Riordan instead. Then he went on to complain that our school library (I'm the librarian) doesn't have all of the Rick Riordan books. To which the obvious answer was: "OK, Bryan...write me a project!"
This will be the second project at our school to have been written by a student. I have very high hopes of the new DonorsChoose.org student led projects. I am, I guess, the DonorsChoose.org Guru at our K-8 Center. It's DonorsChoose.org that keeps our library supplied with books. It is our life blood, and has been for some years now. I am constantly pushing other teachers to try DonorsChoose.org, but often get responses like 'I'd love to, but I just don't seem to find the time.' You can see why I'm so excited that students can now help our teachers... AND our middle school students have a community service requirement, so they should be really motivated to help! I am hoping that Bryan's project will help spread the message about these new projects. I know it will help his computer skills, as he looks for the Rick Riordan books on Amazon Prime, plus his writing skills, of course. Also his persuasive skills, since he's counting on the help of his classmates to get this project financed.
In Their Own Words
I am trying to complete this goal of having my school have all the Rick Riordan books. I love the way that Rick Riordan teaches us about mythology and, at the same time, he entertains us.
Lots of the students in my class are mythology fans. I will try to make everyone in my class (seventh grade gifted) participate in this project by asking their families and friends to contribute.
This project is important because it gets students to read more and enjoy books. Students will learn that reading is fun in many ways. Kids will learn that there is more to entertaining than just electronics. They would learn how to open their imagination with books.
