Me: "1, 2, 3,...eyes on me." Students:" 1,2, eyes on you." This the chant I often use to get my students' attention when I want to share information, whether it be oral or visual. Many young learners perform best with visual models, an example to guide them from start to finish.
My students are a class of 5, 6, and 7 year-olds, typically called Kindergarten and 1st graders.
We learn from each other and rely on our strong learning community to reach our goals. Students stay with me for two years, with a 3rd year option, as they progress through the early curriculum. We are a K-5 school of 300 +/- students. Classes are very involved in our community, with many service learning projects going on through out the year.
My Project
Young learners need many models to help advance their learning. Classrooms often use resources such as posters, class work, pictures, charts, etc., to give learners information, and lead them to independent learning. A document camera would give me an opportunity to project a variety of work that students could use as a model. For example, we use a certain type of writing paper in our writing program. I could project a blank piece and create a story, with a focus on punctuation or letter formation. Another application might be to share a student story, highlighting their awesome beginning, middle, and end. I envision using a document camera across the curriculum with modeled literacy, math, science and social studies lessons. I believe this enhanced mode of projecting visual models will reach and teach all students in the class.
Research indicates approximately 65% of all learners are visual learners (www.purduecal.edu/cie/fliers/Oct.8.2008.pdf).
As a veteran K-1 teacher, I see the need for visual resources to aide young learners on a daily basis. Using relevant, meaningful models to support their progress and achievement, can only lead to success.
