it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My 11th grade ICT classes read the graphic novel memoir, The Best We Could Do, because it offers a deeply personal and insightful look at the Vietnam War and its lasting impact on families through the lens of a Vietnamese American's experience, exploring themes of displacement, immigration, intergenerational trauma, identity, and the complex dynamics of family relationships, all presented in a powerful graphic novel format that makes history accessible and emotionally engaging.
When we study this memoir, we read individually, have Socratic Seminars, complete creative projects, learn about the Vietnam War and the impact it has on Vietnamese people through generations.
My students also connect to Thi Bui's family's immigrant experience, as many of their families are first or second generation.
We are running low on copies of this beautiful book, and if I am going to teach it to the next 11th grade class, I need to replenish!
