My Students
My students are adorable, sweet, and kind to each other. They face great challenges outside of the classroom. We create a safe, fun, and empowering classroom for our students to thrive in all areas of their life.
Our school is located in the inner city with underprivileged families striving for a better life.
Single parents, grandparents, and older siblings continue to do their very best to instill a better way of living for their families. They face many challenges, but that doesn't impede them from wanting to learn or stop them from dreaming big.
We are 95% African American, 2% Haitian American, 2% Hispanic and 1% Caucasian, with 97% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch.
Teachers create a safe, fun, and empowering classroom for our students to help them thrive in all areas of their lives. I love my students and spend most of my out-of-the-classroom time developing projects to enhance their learning and well-being.
My Project
Miami is a multicultural community. There are people from all over the world, especially the Caribbean and Latin America. There are people from Asian, Africa, Germany, Russia, The Middle East, China, and more. There are music, dances, and sports from those communities that I would like my students to learn. Learning about another culture at an early age helps create tolerance. And "football", what is commonly called soccer in this country is huge for many of those communities. Unfortunately students from the area around my school may not have as much contact with this exciting sport. They are missing out on an important cultural pass time that is prevelent in their own hometown.
It is my intention to increase student knowledge of the rich cultures in their community, and to have them enjoy a form of exercise and fun that can become a lifelong practice.
The students can learn the rules of the game, teamwork, the discipline of moving the balls without their hands, and the joy of making (or blocking!) a goal. They will learn greater tolerance for other cultures by understanding games that are enjoyed by others. And then at the end of the school year they will each take home a ball to use at their homes and in their neighborhoods. We will also be learning about the music and dance of many of the different cultures that make up the population of our county. We will dance German, Russian, Asian, and Spanish dances. We will taste flavors and watch videos to learn more about other people and places and what makes them wonderful.
