My Project

Reading is not a novel idea

Regrettably, the habit has gotten nixed in certain circles

Middle schoolers would rather get lost in countless hours of texting or chatting with friends they know

Than get caught reading about and reflecting on an unfamiliar future friend or foe

But, I have a plan!

I’ve partnered with a local after-school organization that serves our students in countless ways

We’ve put our heads together and decided to deal with this reading dilemma with strategic plays

We’re going to channel the game of chess, and here’s our version of a scholar’s mate: catch our students off guard with a choice of four or so fun treats

They’ll totally take the bait!

When students finish reading and then writing and sharing about their story, they’ll be eligible for a prize

Try books, certificates, swag bags, and their favorite foods on for size

A graphic novel and a gift are bound to bring joy back to reading before it's too late

This idea is constructive, holistic, effective, substantive and sustainable

There’s no denying. It’s a good old fashioned checkmate!

After receiving a lot of feedback from our youth about their reluctance to want to read for fun, let alone academics, the after-school program managers decided to offer a year long reading program aimed at bringing back the joy of reading. They contacted me, and I was eager to get involved, too!

Steve Sheinkin and Maurice Ashley’s book Mind Vs. Machine: The Chess Match That Changed the World would definitely support this reading initiative. Steve is an amazing narrative nonfiction writer whose books have captivated readers of all ages. His and Maurice's teamwork cannot be topped! And, Thien Pham’s illustrations...they capture the topic and time period perfectly!
