My Students
Connections. That's what great literature provides--ways to connect to the past, present, and future. But our book room is outdated, and lacks novels outside the mainstream Western canon. With your help, we hope to add Marquez's 100 Years of Solitude so our students can connect to new voices.
In just one year, we've expanded the AP English Language program to include more first-generation college applicants and underrepresented students in our otherwise large urban public high school.
Our students are bright and motivated, but as we expand, it's difficult for newer students to "see themselves" reflected in the existing curriculum. We're working to change this--but our textbook room doesn't yet reflect the cultures and voices of our students.
My Project
As we read and analyze in preparation for the AP English Literature test, 100 Years of Solitude will form the cornerstone of our semester examining the novel--building a bridge from older works like A Tale of Two Cities. Students discuss, write creatively, practice AP-style prompts, and more using the novel as a foundation.
Students are most inspired when they see themselves reflected in the curriculum.
As we work to encourage more students of color to enroll in and be supported in our AP classes, our textbook room needs to modernize, too. Adding 100 Years of Solitude to our book room would be a huge step forward for our program.
