My Students

My school is a charter school that serves a low-income community. Originally started to serve governmental housing, our school has grown to include other low-income families in Nashville that crave a school that believes in their kids, despite their economic circumstances.

My students struggle with having to grow up too fast when all they really want is to be kids.

At home, many students take care of younger siblings, prepare their own food and manage their own bed time. At school, they get to play. We love to play pretend during recess, listen to read aloud books on the carpet, and use scissors and glue during centers.

These third graders already have good hearts. They want to help their teammates. They want to serve their community. They want to be responsible adults. I want to give them the tools so they can achieve their dreams.

My Project

Did you know that kids growing up in poverty hear 30 million fewer words by age 3? When they come to school in kindergarten, they are already behind their middle class peers. My kids have to work twice as hard as other students just to catch up. Many families send their kids to my school in later grades, too, because our kids are learning more than the local public schools. We welcome them, but now my third grade classroom has a range of readers from a 1st grade level to a 5th grade level.

I want to maximize every minute of my kids' day.

It is not enough to give them books and push them to go read by themselves. My students need activities that will grow their proficiency in all aspects of literacy- fiction and nonfiction comprehension, grammar, and vocabulary.

The task cards and vocabulary work books will increase my students "at bats" with rigorous content throughout the day. They will be able to use these during centers or when finishing work early. It also will help differentiate extension work for on-grade-level scholars to continue to push them.
