Help me give my students safety and security. We need walkie talkies to help staff communicate in our program to ensure kids who run out of the classroom stay safe.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 34 self-contained high school students.
We reside in a Title I school, which means there is very little funding, yet we have such a high need for supplies!
My students are all amazing, unique, loving and energetic humans! They are vibrant and brave, active and creative. My students have a variety of diagnoses including but not limited to: Autism Spectrum Disorder, ADHD, ED, Down Syndrome, LD, and multiple disabilities. I have verbal students as well as nonverbal students. All of my students have difficulty with communication skills, social skills, and struggle to process sensory information.
Our class is bare and supplies are minimal. My students deserve the best, and at the very least deserve the items deemed necessary to help them self-regulate, de-stress, and provide imperative sensory stimulation.
My Project
Our classrooms house self-contained students with many different needs. We do the best that we can to ensure the safety of all students and staff at all times. Our program is in need of walkie talkies to communicate when a student "bolts" out of the classroom.
Student safety is our #1 priority!
Bolting, also known as “elopement” is when the child inappropriately leaves the immediate area without having permission to do so. Bolting can occur within a home (such as running off to another room in the house) or in the community (such as running down the street or away from the parent when in a store). We work very hard to correct the behavior but this takes time. In the meantime, we need to ensure all students and staff are safe by being able to communicate at all times.
Using cell phones can be a time consuming struggle (locating phone numbers) as we run after a student. The walkie talkies would be separated 1 in each of our 3 classrooms and the extra 3 would go with staff who work with sensitive need students when they leave the classroom for any reason (specials, bathroom, etc).
More than half of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
