This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My eighty-five 6th graders more than ever need emotional and social support and the necessary tools/strategies. This will help them remain in the classroom rather than being sent out and becoming an avoidance tactic as reading and writing become more challenging. Everything can be a big deal to them. Many get stuck in a rut overreacting to small problems or drama again and again. So they need to learn how to evaluate the size of their problem in order for them to choose the appropriate reaction and solution. If not they shut down, put their head on the desk and don’t learn. This becomes disruptive to all students. All students need support in identifying feelings and emotions to better manage stress, self-regulate and control their impulses. They need help in releasing their anxiety, anger, and other negative feelings.

My mission is to help teach students through their own adversity - the healthy way to cope so they can continue learning!

For example, a bean bag chair will provide comfort. Soothing materials such as, coloring pages, play dough, sensory bottles, stress balls, breathing mazes, visual strategies, a timer, and other activities will be used to help them quickly regain control of their emotions; so, they can focus on academics rather than negative emotions. A table will provide a spot to store the calming items and the timer, which monitors their 5-minute chill break. Finally, a rug will allow them to lie down to re-group while providing a cozy, calm-looking corner.
