My project needs a variety of titles including a Food Groups Book Set and Eat Your Vegetables! Drink Your Milk! about nutrition for an integrated math, science and literacy unit.
As a media coordinator in an urban school I hear about it every day -- childhood obesity, lack of exercise, and a large group of students who have diabetes. It is alarming to teachers and parents, but I feel my students need a good base of knowledge to understand their body's needs.
My project will be an integrated unit involving math, science, and literature in a study of nutrition. Students in my 3rd grade classes will read about unusual vegetables, diets of pirates and Vikings, and compare these diets to modern healthy guidelines. We will study the "new food pyramid" as we read about foods from various cultures and countries. We will study journal articles and news articles about food and its impact on growing bodies.
Our media center is just starting to recognize the lack of up-to-date materials on the study of nutrition for students. I want to improve my collection to give students a chance to understand what they need. Selected students will give "Nutrition Updates" on our local in-house TV station on a weekly basis and introduce the new media center books during health segments of our broadcast.
Knowledge truly is power. Let's give our students a chance to learn and enjoy the health they've been given.
