About My Students

I teach 9th and 10th grade AVID students. Typically my students are first generation college hopefuls from low-income families. They are smart, self motivated, and strong. They often come to school with so much baggage (poverty, drug addicted parents, abuse, homelessness, etc) it's a wonder they're still standing.

But stand they do!

They work hard every day because they know that education is the key to a better life. They are incredibly resilient young men and women and I find myself inspired by them daily.

My students completed a Community Service Project where they had to work together in teams to come up with a project idea that would serve our class, our school, or our community. Teams did research and interviewed classmates and community members regarding the needs in our community. They presented their ideas to the class and then our whole class voted on the winning idea. My class chose this 1 in 5 campaign as the winning idea.

My students have taken on leadership rolls in getting this project approved by administrators and working with community members to volunteer for daily lunchtime activities. We've been working on this for 6 weeks now and my students are excited to see this project come to fruition! They've shown great determination in sticking with this to make sure that our whole campus gets to have an open conversation about Mental Health.

In Their Own Words

We're hoping to start a school wide conversation about Mental Health and create an environment where students who are struggling with anxiety, depression, toxic stress, or eating disorders feel comfortable reaching out for help. A high school campus can be an intimidating place. Our hope is that the Mental Health Awareness campaign will reduce the stigma associated with mental health so that students can get the help they need.

We will be in charge of filming daily bulletins, creating daily informational pamphlets, running lunch time activities, and coordinating with community support staff. We've got ourselves organized into teams already so we know what we need to do and we're ready to do it! We're looking forward to being leaders among our peers.

1 in 5 teenagers struggles with Mental Health issues on a high school campus and yet, most students don't feel comfortable talking about these issues with their teachers or peers. We're hoping to start a conversation and create a more supportive environment for students. We're all in this together and the more we're able to talk to each other, the better change we all have at becoming successful.
