Help me give my students the hands-on tools they need to practice math skills with Ten Frame and Counting Trays, Magnetic Numbers and Counters, and Beginning Operations Folder Games.
I teach in a Title I school where 100% of my students receive free breakfast and lunch. My students come from a low-income population and most lack basic math skills. They come to kindergarten without knowledge or experience in counting or mathematical relationships.
The children in my class love coming to school and having new experiences!
They are eager to learn and get so excited when they can be successful!
I serve a transient population, including students from military as well as homeless and displaced families. Our students often come to us with gaps in their education and many need extra support to reach grade-level standards.
My Project
These manipulatives and math tools will provide my students with a visual and tactile way to practice the math skills they are learning. Learning to count can be difficult for my kindergartners until they begin to recognize number patterns.
Brain research shows that the more senses are involved, the more easily young children can grasp these abstract concepts.
Ten-Frame trays will give each student the ability to visualize and manipulate objects for counting and help them see what ten looks like. The Magnetic Base 10 Set will let me demonstrate number relationships before children explore on their own. The Magnetic Numbers and Counters and Hands-on Counting Trays will provide more tools that they can manipulate to practice counting and making sets. The Linking Number Monkeys are a fun way for children to practice number order and counting.
Beginning Operations Folder Games allow learning through play as well as cooperative activities that teach my students to work together, sharing ideas and supporting each other. Cooperative activities will also support language learning, especially for my students whose native language is not English. The Geometry Light-Up Activity and Tangram cards will give them what they need to explore shapes and how they fit together.
Each of these activities will support early math skill success. My students will learn how to count and group numbers, and recognize number patterns and relationships, essential skills that provide the foundation for both immediate and future numeracy mastery. .
