My Students

I teach 1st grade at a primary school low income, rural area in Eastern North Carolina. The students in my classroom come from all different backgrounds and with their own learning styles/needs.

My classroom is a STEM class where students are infusing the engineering design process into the daily curriculum.

Students work together in groups to design and create hands-on projects that directly correlate with our curriculum.

By working through the design process, students are continuously building relationships, strengthening vocabulary, and learning how to work efficiently as a team.

My Project

My classroom is fairly small and my students need a common area where they can work together as a group. Having a large carpeted area in a room with tile floors would provide a meeting place for students to work comfortably.

A classroom rug would provide students with a comfortable, safe, space for them to interact with peers and be involved in classroom activities.

Since we are a designated STEM classroom, my students are constantly up and moving around the room gathering materials, sharing ideas, and observing their peers. A classroom rug gives my students a central space to gather to communicate as a group. Having a rug that is in a grid pattern will give each student his/her own personal space when sitting with the whole group.
