This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are 26 curious and energetic Kindergarten boys and girls. They go to school for a full day of learning, so a hands-on approach to reading, math and science really helps them when they are wiggly! They enjoy listening to stories, singing songs, playing on the playground and learning in school. Growing up in an inner city poses numerous challenges for them, but they are smart children! Having the supplies to help them learn in a fun and interactive way helps to close the achievement gap that many of the students face.
My Project
When children are learning to count in preschool, they need to practice their counting skills regularly. While some students enter Kindergarten prepared with the math skill of 1 to 1 correspondence, many need to count over and over, using manipulatives so they can learn to move one, as they count one.
These math supplies will make counting easy and interesting for my eager-to-learn students.
The learning center can be used by a small group of four students. The counting kits will be used by the teacher working with a group of several kids and also by two students as a work station activity.
