My Students

You can't learn when you are cold, hungry, and worry about where you're going to sleep. Last winter, our city went down to negative eight degrees! This project will help homeless students have the life essentials of warmth through winter coats.

There are only 25 schools in North America and the Caribbean who hold this distinction.

Our high school is one of the most ethnically diverse schools in Chicago (27% white, 28% Hispanic, and 33 % Black, and 7% Asian). 47% of our students are eligible for free or reduced-priced lunch. 11% of our students have Individual Education Programs (IEPs) and receive support in co-taught classrooms as well as extra resource time. Our diversity also includes students in our "Temporary Living Situations Program". The mission of the program is "that every homeless child and youth attending Chicago Public Schools shall have equal access to the same free, appropriate education and programs as is provided other children and youth. No homeless child or youth shall be discriminated against, segregated from the mainstream school population, isolated on the basis of his/her homeless or stigmatized."

My Project

In agreement with the "Students in Temporary Living Situations Program", we must do everything in our power to make sure our homeless students can access the education in our school buildings. The first step to getting students to school is to make sure that they are warm enough to walk to and from school. Students will be able fulfill their intellectual curiosity in our school only if they can arrive safely first.

No student should have to worry about how they will stay warm in our Chicago winters.

The coats will help our homeless students worry less about staying warm and focus on their academics. Students in Temporary Living Situations have a unique set of experiences and perspectives. All of our students benefit from having a diverse group of students with a diverse set of experiences.
