My Students
Students line up outside my room in the morning. They sneak quiet messages to me in hall. They leave notes on my white board in desperation. What these students want are more BOOKS. Imagine that! My supply is large, as I am a life long lover of reading, but it's not keeping up to their demand!
Well, I teach students that are learning English.
That is who I work with every day- the English Language Learners. I work with students in FOUR different grade levels. We all live in an urban community that does not always hold reading and writing to the appropriate respect level. My students come from homes where English is not spoken or read. My students are all two to three grade levels behind in reading. They struggle with being excited about reading because of how low their reading levels are. To be in 4th grade, reading on a 2nd grade level is embarrassing enough.
Since I work with so many grade levels, I come into contact with over 150+ students on a daily basis. So my student's library has quickly expanded and welcomed all students in the school. Trust me, I am not complaining!
My Project
What I need is more books to keep a book in every student's hand! Often times, many students are waiting on the same book in a series. So I have to tell them they'll have to wait and they walk away empty handed. I hate seeing a student who is dying to read walk away unfulfilled.
The books I am requesting are series that my male students have started to DEVOUR. Both are graphic novel type books and both have numerous books in the series. My male students have started enjoying being able to continue from book to book, experiencing the new adventures of familiar characters. I want to be able to keep their love of these reading explorations active!
My students are exhausting my book collection, in a good way.
They are reading the books I have as quickly as I can place them in their hands. I want to keep this love and desire of reading alive and well. Only good things can come from a daily desire to read. I am hoping it will lead to their lifelong love of reading daily.
