My Students
The main source of bullying and being picked on for my students stems from the fact that they are not reading on grade level. They are picked on and bullied because they are reading "baby books" and aren't reading the "cool" books like their peers.
I teach students that are learning English, that is who I work with every day; the English Language Learners.
I work with students in four different grade levels. We all live in an urban community that does not always hold reading and writing to the appropriate respect level. My students come from homes where English is not spoken or read.
Of my students, some are receiving Special Education services. Some are receiving Gifted Services. Some have a diagnosis of ADD and ADHD. They are all learning at different levels and in different ways.
I don't want my students to look at the language barrier as something they will never overcome. I want to fill them with motivation and determination to push full steam ahead with learning!
My Project
My students are fortunate enough that they are provided with guided reading practice at least three days a week. What these audio books and headphone system will do is allow for additional guided reading practice when they are not meeting with me in groups. Reading along with an audio book will allow my students to have individual control of their guided reading. My students will listen to certain parts, or the whole story, over again in order to aid in comprehension. And being able to complete a loved chapter book will instill confidence in reading that they might not otherwise possess. Plus, what better way to improve your English than to hear a fluent English speaker read a book to you while you follow along!
I will be recording Bullying in Schools for students to listen and read along with in order to aid their understanding of bullying and how to combat it. My students need a collection of high interest audio books to listen to . They also need a wireless headphone system so they can access all these audio books.
My students LOVE to read.
What they do not love is being bullied for not yet being able to read on grade level in English. With these audio books and chapter books, my students will be able to continue their enormous growth in reading.
