My Students
"Treat others the same way you want them to treat you." I have this poster up on my wall in my room. But already eight weeks into school, many of my students are being bullied, or are starting to show signs of bullying other. It's an awful cycle that I want to see come to an end.
I teach students that are learning English.
That is who I work with every day; the English Language Learners. I work with students in FOUR different grade levels. We all live in an urban community that does not always hold reading and writing to the appropriate respect level. My students come from homes where English is not spoken or read.
Of my students, some are receiving Special Education services. Some are receiving Gifted Services. Some have a diagnosis of ADD and ADHD. They are all learning at different levels and in different ways.
I don't want my students to look at the language barrier as something they will never overcome. I want to fill them with motivation and determination to push full steam ahead with learning!
My Project
I am requesting a "Bullying in the Classroom" book from AKJ books, along with other bullying prevention materials for my classroom. I am also requesting books about historical figures that came across a long of "bullies" in their lives and went on to overcome that. A document camera is needed to display the bullying books to my class, so that all of my students can read along with the text.
Bullying prevention needs to start at an early age.
Kids should be exposed to ways to deal with their differences, rather than making fun of others. These materials will help my students grasp the concept of being a good citizen inside and outside my classroom.
