Having taught 7th grade for the past 4 years, I have witnessed firsthand the power of experiential learning. It has been said that up to 80% of what is learned through experience is retained, as opposed to the 10-20% retention rate from listening or reading. I am a 7th grade teacher in rural North Carolina. More than half of my students are from lower income and disadvantaged families. I also teach a large number of students for whom English is a second language. The kids that filter from my school to the local high school have the highest drop out rate in our county, which, overall, has one of the higest drop out rates in the state. My hope is that by engaging these kids while still in middle school, I will be able, in my own small way, to impact those statistics. The Teacher's Curriculum Institute has created a series of resources that will help me to bring Social Studies to life in my classroom. They are filled with real experiential lessons and ideas for me to implement along with manipulatives and resources to be used directly by the students. These activities and lessons are based on three well-established theories: multiple intelligences, cooperative interaction, and spiral curriculum. These activities and lessons already correlate to the North Carolina Standard Course of Study for 7th grade Social Studies. They are all active, thought-provoking, and fun- all essential elements in the learning process. The one that I am requesting through this proposal is "Bringing Geography Alive!" teacher resources. These resources also come with student resources. Many students, and even many adults, do not know or understand geography. It involves much more than locating places on a map. It is an involved and very interesting subject, if you can teach it correctly. It is for this purpose that I am requesting these materials. I hope that you can help me to bring these much desired resources to our school. I will be able to share these with the other 7th grade Social Studies teachers. With these resources we can impact a whole grade level of about 300 students each year! More important than the information that these resources will impart is the EXCITEMENT FOR LEARNING that will absolutely follow because of the experiences. THAT should not be considered costly, rather, it should be understood that it is PRICELESS!
