Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

International High School (IHS) is a school located in Brooklyn, New York. It was opened in the fall of 2005 and is designed to meet the needs of some of Americas newest high school students. The population of IHS is entirely English Language Learners (ELL) who have lived in the country for four years or less upon entrance to the program. Over 95% of our student population receives free or reduced lunch. Needless to say, our students do not have access to many things found in upper-middle or upper class school systems. We have a fledgling Physical Education program at IHS. Funding resources are limited for new athletic equipment and our ability to share resources with the school upstairs is also difficult. Furthermore, combating what our students see in the media promoting negative eating or exercise habits without proper equipment makes the job of the gym teacher nearly impossible. The resource I am requesting is a piece of weight lifting equipment, which would provide numerous benefits to our PE program. As the weather gets colder and we move inside, this equipment will provide many hours of instructional value and fun to our student population enrolled in gym class. It will also allow the gym teacher to provide instruction on a sport that is usually limited to only those who can afford the high priced equipment and lessons associated with it. Since our students do not have that type of financial support at home, they would learn a lot in a short time about this sport not found in many of their home countries.
