Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever been confronted with a problem that was too much for you to solve by yourself? If so, you probably turned to a friend to help you out. But what if your buddy couldn't help you? My students must develop these fundamental skills, not only to pass math this year, but for their lifetimes.
I teach math to 75 fourth graders over 3 classes of 90 minutes each, every day.
They each have their own personalities, set of skills and life experiences. Because of these differences, I need to differentiate and work with kids on their own levels each period.
My students are extremely bright and love to learn when you build relationships and motivate them, but with a few exceptions they are extremely behind their peers in other states and higher income groups. Our school is 98% free and reduced lunch. Our school performance score is low, but growing despite our many obstacles. Students, faculty, and parents are working hard for change but we need some extra help.
My Project
My students can't see the connection between math in the classroom and math in the real world. They can't relate to finding the answer to an addition problem connected to the world they live in. Being able to connect to that real world application is what students must assimilate in order to grow academically and personally. Through the problem solving kits, cards and journals I will be able to bring more real world problem solving into my math lessons by focusing on solving word problems using examples and situations encountered in everyday life.
My students need these independent and group practice materials to allow them the opportunity to develop essential problem-solving skills, gain more independence in their learning and be able to live successfully in this fast moving world.
