Our school has approximately 635 children grades K-4. The children love to play on the playground during recess or run around outside. Unfortunately, during the winter and on rainy days, the children have no choice but to return to the classrooms for recess. The gym is used all day by physical education classes, so the children have no place else to go for "rainy day" recess. Most of the children regard indoor recess as "boring". The teachers in the school wish that we had more resources that were appropriate for use within the classroom but still entertaining and active for the children. We would like recess to feel more like play time for the children.
Additionally, this year, our school has adopted a wellness initiative. The teachers no longer reward children with candy and snacks, the cafeteria serves healthy lunch selections and our holiday parties have more vegetable trays than cupcakes. Given the rise in childhood obesity, this is a very important initiative for our students. I feel like the physical health component of the wellness initiative could be developed in a more beneficial manner. On days when the children play outside, they get plenty of exercise. They run around and usually return to class out of breath. The children also have physical education twice a week. This period offers them a chance to run and play as well. On days when the children have indoor recess and no physical education, however, they have no opportunity to physically exert themselves.
For this reason, I would like to submit a proposal for funds to create in-class activities that promote both physical health and social development. I would like to create large bins for each inclusion classroom in third grade (there are 2) with different games activities for the children to choose from during indoor recess days.
